New Jersey Drivers Practice Exam: Prep, Questions & Study Guide

When merging onto a highway, it is crucial to speed up to match the flow of traffic. This action is important for maintaining safety both for yourself and for the other drivers already on the highway. Highways typically have higher speed limits, and merging at a speed that is too slow can create dangerous situations, as it may disrupt the flow of traffic and increase the risk of collisions.

By accelerating to align with the traffic speed, you can safely enter the highway and position your vehicle within the existing traffic lanes without abruptly forcing other drivers to make unexpected maneuvers. It's also essential to check your mirrors and blind spots to ensure that the lane you are entering is clear, which is part of safe merging practices, but matching the speed of traffic is a fundamental component of this process.
